Sales of energy-efficient light bulbs rise

Sales of energy-efficient light bulbs reached £40 million in the year to December 2007, suggesting that Britain's householders have finally become more environmentally conscious.

Figures released by GfK Retail and Technology (GfK) revealed that sales of the energy-friendly bulbs climbed 28 per cent, while the traditional incandescent bulbs fell by 13.7 per cent.

Incandescent bulbs will be phased out by 2011 in a push to save five million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by 2012.

Paul Mitchell, senior account manager at GfK, says that the retail figures are good news.

"The impact of environmental concerns continues to be seen in consumer spending patterns," he said.

The Department of Energy advises that changing light bulbs represents one of the easiest contributions that homeowners can make to helping reduce their impact on the environment.

"They're not expensive and it does make a difference. One of the easiest things you can do is change your light bulbs and make them energy efficient," a spokesman said.
